I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of Merrin's POV we got, though. Yeah I'm not gonna say the book is amazing or anything, I thought there was a little too much of the Merrin/Fret romance for my tastes. Merrin didn't have those problems so she confused his repression for lack of interest. He was afraid of losing her like he lost pretty much everyone else he ever cared deeply for.Ĭal's a Jedi, he's been emotionally repressed since childhood, he has difficulty expressing himself. He has some character growth in the novel where he learns to get over this overprotective instinct and let her fight instead of constantly feeling like it's his responsibility to make sacrifice plays for her (and by extension the team) when missions go sideways. She thought the reason why he's so protective of her is that he feels that way about everyone, not realizing he does actually have stronger feelings for her than for the rest of the crew. I got the impression that she may be open to a relationship with him but the book just ran out of runtime to explore it. It's just that Merrin was oblivious to his attraction to her until her temporary girlfriend pointed it out. If you finished the book (which is not nearly as bad as people keep saying, you'd think it was My Immortal levels of fanfic garbage, it's basically just a halfway-decent YA novel instead of prize-winning collegiate literature) you'd know that Cal is not exactly sticking to that part of the Jedi Code.
